Council race grows in Vermillion County

NEWPORT, Ind. A race for county councilman at-large on the Democratic ticket is shaping up in Vermillion County.

Three candidates recently filed the necessary paperwork to join two others on the ballot for three seats.

Margaret Roderick, Thomas Collins and Mike Reed, who was chosen last month at a Democratic caucus to fill an unexpired term, filed this week, along with Republican Larry Stoops for the council seats.

Previous filings for councilman at-large were incumbents Michael Costello and LaVinna Mattick, both Democrats.

The only other new filings in Vermillion County this week were incumbent coroner Darrin Tucker on the Democratic ticket and John Garner for the Highland Township seat on the North Vermillion School Board.

Earlier filings were recorded for the following Democrats: Florinda A. Pruitt, Dot Farr Lindsay and Roxanne Sager for clerk; incumbent councilman Michael Costello; incumbent commissioners Harry Crossley in district 1 and Timothy J. Wilson in district 3; Wendy Farley for treasurer; Phyllis Orman for auditor; and Jared Dreher for surveyor.

Other filings for the North Vermillion School Board include incumbents Larry Bemis in Vermillion Township and Roger Lewis for the Eugene Township seat.

In Warren County, John A. Layton filed as a Republican and Richard L. Dobbels as a Democrat for councilman at-large seats, and Nina Wright for the Mound Township seat on the Covington School Board.

Other filings include incumbent Roy Wesley and Dean Brooks, Republicans, and Democrat Larry D. Reynolds for commissioner from district 1; incumbent Republican Randy Haddock for surveyor; incumbent Republican Thomas Hetrick for commissioner from district 2; Republicans Brian Jackson, George Taylor and James E. Lanham for the three council at-large seats; and Andy Briles for the Warren County School Board seat from Washington Township.

In Fountain County, there were no new filings this week.

Earlier filings were Republican Walt Wilson and Democrat M. Troy Alexander for the commissioner seat for district 1; incumbent Republican Janet Shoaf for commissioner for district 2; incumbent Republican auditor Colleen Chambers; Republican Joe Gritten for coroner; incumbent Republican treasurer Susan Coffing; and incumbent Republican Thomas W. Frease for coun-cilman at-large.

In the Attica School Board race, Tony Crane, Harold Long and Jerry Mattern have filed for two seats in the city and Michael Wrighthouse has filed for the Logan Township seat.

Deadline for filings is noon Thursday.
