DANVILLE — Slick roads continued to play havoc out in the county, causing a number of accidents, some with injuries.
A fatal crash and a number of accidents on Interstate 74 on Tuesday were followed by several crashes on county roads blamed on continuing icy conditions.
A driver who ran off the road Wednesday morning blamed the accident on black ice. Timothy Cooke, 49, of Ridge Farm was headed west at 9:15 a.m. on County Road 800N near County Road 500E when he hit a patch of ice and lost control of his truck. The vehicle left the road and into a drainage ditch, rolling over once before coming to rest on its wheels.
Both Cooke and a passenger, Emily Bloedsoe of Ridge Farm, were taken to Provena United Samaritans Medical Center, where they were treated and released.
Later in the day a semi driver ran into similar ice problems.
Willis Kistler Jr., 46, of Fairmount, was headed north at 3:15 p.m. on County Road 1055E, south of County Road 2750, in an Illiana Seed Co. semi tractor-trailer.
Accident reports indicate the trailer began to slide, going into the ditch and overturning. The action caused the truck to overturn as well, coming to rest on its roof.
Kistler, who complained of injuries to his head, right hand and ribs, was taken to Provena USMC and later transferred to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. He was listed in good condition.
The slick roads caused another afternoon accident along County Road 700N. Brandon Tuggle, 17, of Indianola was headed east when he lost control and went off the road into a ditch. No injures were reported.
— One accident wasn’t good enough for a driver who was issued 10 citations Wednesday night.
Gordon Wallen, 45, of Sidell, was cited for, among other things, DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and leaving the scene of an accident following two crashes within almost 10 minutes of each other.
Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department reports indicate Wallen was headed north on Fairmount-Sidell Road, south of County Road 700N, when he crossed the middle line and struck a southbound vehicle driven by Cathy Johnson, 34, of Sidell. Neither Johnson nor her three passengers were injured.
Wallen left the scene only to be involved in a second accident reported at 6:21 p.m. on County Road 580E at the intersection with Catlin-Homer Road.
There, a northbound Wallen failed to stop and drove through the intersection — almost hitting a passing car in the process. Wallen drove into a ditch.
— Oakwood firefighters knocked down a mobile home fire quickly Wednesday afternoon.
Oakwood Chief Tony Frye said the fire, located on Barbara Drive at the rear of the mobile home park, was extinguished quickly after being contained to the wall of the home. A couple of firefighters who were near Oakwood when the fire was reported just after 4 p.m. helped the department arrive quickly.
Frye reported damage at between $10,000 and $12,000 and consisting of mostly smoke and some fire damage.
