At least one dead in morning crash

DANVILLE — Accidents on slick roads this morning resulted in at least one fatal crash.

Sgt. Bill Emery, spokesman for Illinois State Police District 10 in Pesotum, confirmed an accident on Interstate 74 did involve fatalities. No information was immediately released regarding the number of deaths.

The accident took place at the 213 mile marker just west of the Tilton exit. Mud marks crossed the westbound lanes leading to an overturned pickup truck on the side of the road. The cab of the truck was almost flat.

Emery announced the westbound lanes of the interstate were temporarily closed as a result of the one-vehicle accident and urged drivers to take alternate routes.

The crash was among a barrage that hit the interstate as well as city and county roads as slick conditions caused problems galore for drivers.

Capt. Dennis Wood of the Vermilion County Sheriff¡¦s Department said at mid-morning the department had handled a number of cars in ditches, but no serious problems.

By mid-morning, state police troopers in District 10 reported as many as 10 crashes involving property damage and 50 reports of vehicles that had slid off the roadway and into the ditch. Accidents were mainly reported on the interstate system, although incidents developed on two-lane roads as well.

The weather also succeeded in giving drivers in Indiana a few headaches earlier this morning.

Falling precipitation caused roadways to become slick in some areas, causing minor accidents.

Indiana State Police reported responses to several slide-offs, including along Indiana Route 63 in Vermillion County, Ind.

The Vermillion County Sheriff¡¦s Department also responded to a couple slide-offs this morning. No injuries were reported in the incidents.

By 9:30 am. EST main thoroughfares were reported to be improving, with secondary roads still slick in areas.

Sheriff¡¦s departments in Fountain County and Warren County reported no incidents as a result of the winter weather.
