Let Congress know

The Commercial-News

---- — Treat Congress the same

Editor:

After having a frustrating conversation with a staffer at Rep. Shimkus’ office who vehemently stated that I was wrong, I wondered how many people know what President Obama secured on behalf of Congress, their staffers and the White House staff relating to Obamacare coverage. When Obamacare passed, an amendment was a part of the legislation requiring all congressmen and their staffs to participate in Obamacare. However, this didn’t sit well with congressmen. So, in a ruling issued on Aug. 5, U.S. lawmakers and their staffs will continue to receive a federal contribution toward the health insurance they must purchase through soon-to-open exchanges created by Obamacare. This is a subsidy not afforded to the rest of the American people.

As Sen. Vitter has said, the Obamacare statute states clearly all members of Congress and their staffs are to procure their health insurance through the Obamacare Exchange,” and “no ordinary American … buying on the Exchange would receive any government subsidy, much less one worth $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for a family, under the OPM rule for Congress only.” — which is what this ruling allows.

Instead, we will be forced to pay the high premiums and other outrageous costs associated with this legislation, and, by our taxes, subsidize Congress in their health care. Hardly fair!

If Congress and their staffers don’t like Obamacare, then doesn’t that show just how bad it really is? I suggest everyone call their representatives and protest this outrageous and unfair ruling. Insist that Congress be subject to Obamacare like the rest of us.
