Legalize marijuana

DANVILLE — In response to “Why stop with legalizing medical marijuana?” on April 3: God clears it all up in Genesis Chapter 1 verses 29-31: “And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed: to you it shall be for meat. And to every beast of the earth and to every fowl of the air and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat; and it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.”

It’s meant to be eaten, if you like to eat it. I hate spinach, so I don’t eat it. You could sprinkle it (marijuana) on anything and not even realize it’s in there, spaghetti, pizza, salad … you name it. No damage to your lungs or throat or mouth at all. And the No. 1 side effect? Laughter.

I am no genius, however, marijuana seems like a green, seed-bearing herb to me and should be considered a plant since it grows from the ground. Drugs can cause overdoses. Name one person who has died from an overdose of this plant. The most high God gave us something that is “very good,” yet greedy and ignorant men have deemed it an illegal drug. I am with God on this one.

It is illegal to drink and drive, yet there is a bar with a parking lot on dozens of properties in the city of Danville along with hundreds of other businesses that have parking lots that sell open alcohol. I can no longer drive because of this catch 22. (Although I can pay for a chance to get my driver’s license back.)

So what’s worse, really? Harassing people and basically kidnapping them, locking them in a cage after taking them away from their loved ones? Stealing their plants and money and calling it justice? Or just letting people laugh at their own expense?

It seems that our right to believe in the God of our choice — our constitutionally guarded right — has been disregarded once again in the land of the free.

Why is it that the United States of America is so divided on this issue? I don’t need a doctor to tell me what makes me feel good. I have more than 20 years’ experience of my own to draw my own conclusion on the matter. And why does law enforcement get to possess the same plant, grow the same plant, run tests on the same plant?

Here is a suggestion to Illinois lawmakers: It’s step 10 of Narcotics Anonymous. “We continued to take personal inventory and “when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.”

God is good, and according to him, green herbs are very good.

Todd G. Elliott resides in Danville.
