Hallador Energy, through its subsidiary Sunrise Coal, likes to have local newspapers carry photos and stories about gifts it makes to schools.
If Hallador/Sunrise were to begin to mine and wash coal in southwestern Vermilion County, it would give us even more and much larger gifts: dirty air and ponds of watery coal and rock powder containing toxic materials like arsenic, mercury and selenium sitting forever above our supplies of drinking water.
Hallador/Sunrise also would damage our rich farmland with eventual subsidence.
Why isn’t Hallador/Sunrise open and honest about these “gifts”? I don’t trust Hallador/Sunrise to be the “good neighbor” it claims to be.
