A slap in the face

DANVILLE — Editor:

I read the article about “City OK’s salary raises.” I was not shocked at the outcome of that vote.

It is seemingly much easier to vote pay raises in instead of the conventional way of waiting to grant a raise based on what the city can afford at the time.

In this economy, many have done without any raises in order to retain a job.

Mr. Mayor, pardon me for saying, but it seems to me every time you do something in our fair city you know will raise eyebrows, you find the opportunity to remind us the salaries in other cities are much higher.

I should remind you the neighboring cities have more revenue than we do.

I feel the need to reiterate that taxpayers pay for these salaries.

Frankly, I don’t think my fellow taxpayers or I can afford the mindset of some city council members.

I feel safe in saying the majority of us have worked without raises due to the economy and are grateful to do that in order to have a job.

I do, however, need to commend the city for coming up with the extra money for raises, since, as the article stated the city made no reductions in the work force. Amazing.

A short time ago, officials were going on about the need for lay-offs.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that taxpayers are not smart enough to see through the rhetoric.

What you all have done is nothing shy of a slap in the face to those who help you get those raises.
