I recently read an article about homeless veterans. I remember when Danville Area Community College and Department of Veterans Affairs’ campuses was a soldiers’ home. There were no homeless veterans then.
The veterans who lived there mowed the grass, grew their own garden, fed the hogs from their own table and fished in the lake where the golf course is now. They found their fishing bait — worms, minnows and crawfish tails — in the creek.
Cleveland Street had no gate. Traffic went across the lake on a dam.
I say that area could still be a home for our veterans.
