No database of gun owners

DANVILLE — Editor:

A national database of law-abiding gun owners is the present danger. “When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.” (Thomas Jefferson)

From its inception, America has had a bedrock understanding, enshrined in our 2nd Amendment, of our natural law right to protect ourselves from both personal harm and a tyrannical government.

The founders viewed humans as inherently free and self-responsible individuals. They also understood tyranny. Such ideas, along with other crucial individual rights and a brilliantly conceived separation of governmental powers, constituted the social contract and governmental organization that has been the grandest political experiment in human history.

Some attempt to trivialize, ridicule or otherwise impugn, diminish or destroy this fundamental right. Recent history shows this threatens our personal freedom and the essence of America. Emotional manipulation by sly perversion of language, nonsensical argumentation, and base scare tactics may stampede the American people and their elected representatives into chipping away, bit by bit, our right to bear arms.

Newtown, Aurora, Fort Hood and all the rest — none would have been prevented by the measures being pushed so opportunistically by President Obama. If people don’t wake up, what can happen is that Obama, the gun-grabbers and a host of well-meaning but not clear-thinking citizens will succeed in putting in motion measures leading to a national database of every law-abiding person having a firearm.

It is then an easy next step to methodically go around and confiscate them. “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction” — Ronald Reagan.
