When Vince Lombardi of Green Bay Packers fame said “to win is everything!” I think his statement did more harm than good!
Of course, any person, male or female, worth his or her salt wants to win, otherwise why put forth the effort. This is natural and nothing wrong with winning. It is normal.
For a long time, I haven’t enjoyed professional sports. It seems the old adage “follow the money” has crept into professional sports.
I was watching David Letterman one evening when Lance Armstrong had won one of his races and Robin Williams of Hollywood fame was so happy. He said, “Lance Armstrong! He’s my man,” and he about leaped over Letterman’s sofa! You would have thought he had won the race.
I am talking from hindsight, but just the same, it disgusts me that things have gotten so foul and out of hand.
In football, the game of “He-men” — I never could get interested in that sport. It just seems it’s a good way to get knee and brain damage. They call this sport?
Baseball has had its share of tainted players, and I actually like the Cubs.
My true favorite is watching little 5-year-olds in over-sized helmets play T-ball. Now there is true sport. I said this once and someone spoke up and said, “Yeah! But did you see how unsportsmanlike the parents were?” Well, at the game I was watching everyone was clapping and cheering one another on.
I’m not disgusted with sports, I’m disgusted with crooks and dishonesty.
