Stop slaughtering horses

DANVILLE — We are fighting against the slaughter of horses. Some people are on the fence thinking it’s needed for the welfare of horses and for the prices of horse market to raise the value of their own stock.

Please understand, we don’t slaughter in Illinois, we have laws against the transport, the actual action and the laws require lame and injured or aged animals be put down by a veterinarian. It actually states its illegal to transport downed horses through Illinois or from Illinois to slaughter. They are to be humanely injected.

Horses are transported in tight quarters in trailers to be hit with a captive bolt gun, which makes them unconscious if they are lucky. However, that’s not accurate as they are often quoted by the USDA as waking up during the actual process of being slaughtered.

We have to speak out against this practice. The horse prices have been rising outside of the killer auctions and the average horse private sale are $3,500 and the average pony sale is above $400, so we have to elevate our expectations and work to get the right buyers.

Please be aware, we own a western store, and train horses for years and are not newcomers to the industry. The fantasy that horses being slaughtered raises the prices is an ploy. The reason prices raised high was to keep kill buyers from making purchases.

Please sign the petition to overturn the legalization of the slaughter of horses for human consumption on change.org listed under animals. (Yes, did I mention the horse meat scandal where they switched horse meat for beef in Europe, or the fact that horse meat is contaminated by all the drugs we give our horses?)

Contact your congressmen today and let them know you support the safe act, which protects your food from horse meat and stops the slaughter of U.S. horses and bans the shipping of horses outside the U.S. to die.

Cynthia Porter resides in Danville.
