My uncle Robert Tucker received the Purple Heart in World War II while serving in the Navy. He saved countless lives in the ocean’s oil-burning fires while under attack.
When he came home he had Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and turned to alcohol. He was being seen at the VA, but he just got worse and became homeless for years. He finally went to the Oaklawn Inn motel.
But one night turned deadly. His room caught fire. Two brave persons rescued him. But for some reason my uncle went back inside. He was burnt over 90 percent of his body. He later died in the hospital.
It’s sad to think that this heroic man could save other lives but could not save himself from fire.
Remember our veterans who served.
