We’re all fortunate to live in a civil society in America. We also have different opinions about how our society is affected by those who govern. Some of us hold free market economy dear to our hearts, some the environment, etc. Either way, I believe we all have common ground, that when honestly reflected upon, is invaluable to every one of us.

“We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” Found in our Declaration of Independence, this is clearly stating that government’s scope of power is limited and comes from “We the People.” This is our common ground that transcends political affiliation or who’s in office. We can only speculate what our society would be today were it not for our founder’s fight for this document.

Today, our federal government is growing far beyond our founder’s intentions. Among many other irresponsible behaviors, it fails to balance our budget, simultaneously spends our future generation’s unearned income, and is dismantling our Constitution.

So what do we do? We engage and pay attention. We get to know our local, state and federal representatives and learn how they are governing. We enter the voting booth with knowledge.
