Danville School District 118 has really overstepped the bounds of what our democratic process and system should be in its recent vote to develop a new uniform dress code.
I am disturbed by recent comments from the school board. I know some board members say the comments were from only one board member, but no one stood up and challenged those comments.
No board member explained how a new uniform dress code would help in educating our future.
No board member explained what to do if a family can’t afford this change in policy.
No one explained whether District 118 did any research to validate the change.
No one explained what we do with students who don’t comply with the change to wearing uniforms — oh, I apologize, yes they did. It was stated to send them home from school and who cares after that.
How can a school district already not receiving the proper allocations of federal and state funds stay a vital part of our community?
We have policies in place to address pants not being on young men butts. Enforce those policies then address your concerns through the student handbook, but don’t do surveys and then say I am going to do it my way.
I write this with deep regret as a past president and member of the school board. I am at a loss for words. I hope the board has a plan and just didn’t let the community know what the plan was. If not, board members owe every taxpayer and parent an explanation on what just took place.
Please remember, Danville is a great community and when we stop listening to the people we all fall. I respect the commitment every one who serves on the school board puts in, but let’s do the right thing in this case. Let’s make a wrong a right! United we stand, divided we fall.
