Hearts and darts

DANVILLE — Here are some of the good things readers noticed around the area recently”

The co-directors of the National Junior College Athletic Association Men’s Division II Basketball Tournament played in March at Danville Area Community College send “hearts and thanks to the tournament sponsors. The sponsors made it financially feasible to host the 20th NJCAA tournament at DACC and provide trophies, plaques, medals and other items to all of the coaches and players.

“Hearts to the DACC staff and hundreds of volunteers who donate their time and talents to prepare for the tournament and to ensure this tournament remains one of the best. Hearts to the Danville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, who hosted the information table and the hospitality room, along with other things. Also, hearts to all of the businesses that donated the hospitality room food for the volunteers, coaches and other visiting officials. Thank you to the YMCA and Boys & Girls Club for the use of their facilities.

“Special thanks to Beverly Joyce and Mike Roegner for assembling a fine tournament program and to the Commercial-News photographers, Chad Dare and the sportswriters for the great coverage of the tourney, which was excellent. Many favorable comments were received from coaches and fans regarding this coverage. As an example, the front-page article regarding fans such as Carolyn and John Walz, who traveled with the Iowa Lakes team, was great coverage, as was the other articles regarding fans.

“A big thank-you to Mike Hulvey at WDAN, who once again served as the media information co-director and banquet master of ceremonies. The WDAN staff also provided excellent play-by-play coverage of all games, plus broadcasting 13 games to four communities for participating teams. Thanks to Scott Eisenhauer for preparing the media guide booklet for the 117 four-year recruiting coaches who attended and look forward to receiving all the information regarding the participating players and teams.

“Several coaches, such as Rick Madden of Penn Valley, athletic director Rudy Yovich of Owens Community College and out-of-town fans told us the tourney should remain in Danville as long as DACC wants it due to the quality of the tournament and the addition of the new facilities, which is a fine compliment to the sponsors, volunteers and the hospitality of the Danville area.”

Danville High School teachers Jan Keeler and Kelly Frey and members of the school’s We Can Do Anything Club of Danville High School sends hearts to” Bill Wallpe of E&B Gifts and Awards for his help with trophies for our students.

As he put it, “It’s all about the kids!” We couldn’t agree with him more! Thanks, Bill.”
