HOOPESTON — City council members voted 5-1 Tuesday to amend the liquor ordinance regarding the hours of operation for alcohol and gaming. Alderwoman Nancy Stipp was the lone dissenting vote. New hours approved were 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Sunday, seven days a week.
Several business owners approached council members in October requesting gaming hours run longer than the sale of alcohol during Sunday special events and New Year's Eve. However, the gaming hours, by law, are the same as the liquor ordinance hours the city sets. To keep gaming machines on past those hours would require advance notice to the state, which controls the times the gaming machines are operational.
In order to ensure businesses gaming machines remained operational for special events and New Year's Eve, council members decided to amend the ordinance to more uniform operational hours for both alcohol and gaming.
In other business, council members approved unanimously authorizing Foth Engineering to approach Leander Construction to get an estimate of costs to refurbish the filters at Hoopeston's water treatment facility.
"The maximum cost to do the work would total $286,000," said Mike Streff, lead environmental engineer for Foth. He added it would probably be less.
Council members also approve unanimously the authorization for Mayor Bill Crusinberry to sign documentation between the city and Foth Engineering for filter refurbishment at the Hoopeston water treatment facility.
+ Approved unanimously Diaz Construction's bid of $50,500 for a plain gray metal roof on the civic center damaged by hail. This was covered by insurance.
The council approved charging a non-refundable McFerren Park shelter charge of $25. There would be no reservation of shelters without payment up front and a shelter contract signed.
+ Civic center tables and chair rental was approved unanimously by the council. The rental of tables and chairs would require a $250 deposit that is refundable after items are returned in good condition. For tables and chairs not returned on the designated day, an extra charge per day of $8 per table and $1 per chair would be added. The city would not deliver or pick up items. Photo identification also will be required and a correct address.
