Hoopeston council signs off on water tank repair project

HOOPESTON — Mayor Bill Crusinberry signed the notice during Tuesday's city council meeting to award a construction contract for the water tank repair project to Leander Construction of Canton for $2,480,400.

Mike Streff, Foth Infrastructure & Environmnet, L.L.C., said the project will include a 150,000 gallon elevated storage tank, the 500,000 gallon ground storage tanks and a brand new aeration treatment package.

A preconstruction meeting will begin at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in City Hall. According to Streff, Leander Construction will sign the contracts and will have 488 calender days to substantially complete the repair project. The final payment date for the project is set for Jan.25, 2015.

Alderman Bill McElhaney reminded people that repair work will cause "a significant amount of rust as the result" and advised residents to consider purchasing a rust filter system for their homes.

"It will be an inconvenience, but part of the construction," McElhaney said.

The project originally started in the fall of 2006 when the government offered infrastructure grants to cities. Last year, Foth offered to help with a loan from the Illinois EPA and, after almost nine months, the project is scheduled to begin.

In other business, city council members tabled the liquor license amendment until a meeting could be conducted next week with the civic committee. Also tabled was the ambulance agreement for further study by the council. Both items will be on the Oct. 1 agenda.

+ Learned the Illinois State and Department of Health approved the Splash Pad plan for the McFerren Park Pool. A Parks Committee meeting was set for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall.

+ Learned the Illinois EPA plans to test concrete and soil through cracks in the concrete for any hazardous waste from the J&R Used Tire fire last June. Their plan, according to Crusinberry, is not to disturb the concrete if at all possible, just scrape it and clean it. The EPA will clean the retention pond that held the runoff from the fire next year and jet clean all the storm sewers at no cost to the city.

The next city council meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 1 in City Hall, 301 W. Main St.
