Hoopeston council re-signs with Allied Waste

HOOPESTON — City council members voted unanimously Tuesday to remain with Allied Waste/Republic Services for trash pick-up.

The city received two bids for waste services, but chose to remain with its current contractor. The new five-year contract begins in April at the proposed monthly rate of $12.45 per unit. This amount is lower than the current garbage charge of $13 shown on present water bills.

The amount will increase in 2015 to $12.70 per unit, in 2016 to $12.95 per unit, 2017 to $13.20 per unit, 2018 to $13.45 per unit per month based on residential units. Allied Waste will have the right to request new rates if the house count changes or fuel costs increase to more than $4.50 per gallon during the contract, an increase of 6 cents per home per month will be added. Fuel costs will be reviewed quarterly, according to the contract.

The contract also called for possible renegotiations if state or federal regulators imposed any unforseen surcharges on the company.

In other council business, council members:

+ Approved the resolution for the parks grant.

+ Approved the waiver bid for the filter project, the change order for LCI in the amount of $366,775.00, and an advance from the landfill account for the water filtration filter repair which will be repaid by the city.

+ Learned the WHPO Business Expo will be 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and noon-4 p.m. Sunday.

+ The next city council meeting will begin at 7 p.m. March 18 in city hall.
