Hoopeston water project prompts complaints

HOOPESTON — City council members learned Tuesday there had been complaints to several radio/TV stations and to the Environmental Protection Agency from some residents about the city's water quality.

When city officials followed up with the residents about the complaints and an explanation of the ongoing project to improve the water quality, those complaining admitted they did not know about the water project even though information had been in the Commercial-News, Just The Facts and the Hoopeston Chronicle at different times for more than a year.

"If someone doesn't know what we are doing (after all the publicity in local papers), they've had their head in the sand," Mayor Bill Crusinberry said.

Crusinberry added the water is continually tested for problems and a letter from the EPA stating that the water was fine had been received from each test.

"When (water project) completed, everything will be all brand new," Crusinberry said. "An early projected dated for completion is at the end of July." Crusinberry said he wasn't sure all three filters would be back online by then, but at least one would. The quality of Hoopeston water would be greatly improved once the project is completed, he said.

The rusty water during Friday's flushing of the water mains is the result of water and oxygen oxizing, Crusinberry explained.

Hydrants are flushed in order to make sure an adequate flow and pressure of water is available. It also is to remove sediment from the pipes to maintain water clarity and quality in the distribution pipes.

It was suggested that discolored water will clear up if the cold water is run for a few minutes. If it doesn't clear up, wait a few minutes and try it again. However, do avoid washing clothes on Fridays unless residents have a whitening product.
