Hoopeston council earmarks money for water tank project


HOOPESTON — City council members agreed Tuesday to borrow $3 million from the Public Water Supply Loan Program through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for work on the city’s water storage tanks.

"We are going forward. Never been this far before," said Alderman Bill McElhaney. "We are dotting all the I’s and crossing all the T’s for this project."

The loan will pay for refurbishment of the existing 150,000 gallon elevated water tower, refurbishment of the existing 500,000 gallon ground storage tanks, a new package aeration treatment unit, new electrical, controls and instruments, site clean-up, finish grading and surface restoration. 

According to the agreement, the loan will be paid semi-annually and will mature in 20 years. Publication notice of the ordinance will be published next week.

In other council business:

Council members approved the Motor Fuel Tax bid of Ribbe Trucking of Bismarck to oil and chip a nine-block area at a cost not to exceed $82,500. Also approved was the $46,000 bid of Iroquois Paving for the city patching program for the year 2013-2014, and Silver Bothers’ bid of $4.48 per square foot for the Sidewalk 50/50 program.

Alderman Randy Carter added that the 50/50 program is on a first-come, first-served basis. Anyone interested in the sidewalk program should contact the city. Only $4,000 has been allocated for this project.

Council members also approved the budget for 2013-2014 and the Russ Leigh engagement letter for the end of year audit not to exceed $5,800.

Council members animal license fees for unneutered and unspayed animals have been raised. Males unneutered licenses raised to $5 and unspayed female licenses raised to $20. The previous amounts for males was $2 and females was $10.

Council members learned the pool will be open for a free swim day on Monday, Memorial Day. Pool passes can be purchased that day for 20 percent off the new season ticket prices.


The next Hoopeston City council meeting will be Tuesday, June 5, 7:00 p.m. at City Hall, 301 West Main Street.
