Hoopeston Area schools receive state grant

HOOPESTON — Hoopeston Area school board members learned Thursday the district had received a grant of $49,000 from the state of Illinois to pay half the cost to replace water pipes under Maple Grade School.

"The grant," said Mark Eighner, transportation/buildings and grounds supervisor, "was a 50/50 match grant up to $50,000. We just need to get someone to replace the piping."

The school had recently had asbestos removed from under the school and found some of the pipes were leaking. According to Superintendent Hank Hornbeck, Eighner applied for a grant to the state to help replace the pipes and was approved.

In other school board business, school board members:

unanimously approved the student policy manuals for the 2013-2014 year for Maple, Honeywell, John Greer and the middle school. Also approved was the gas bid to Illini FS, bread bid from Aunt Millie’s Bakery, and Prairie Farms for milk for the 2013-2014 school year.

Heard the end of year financial report from Mark Eighner, district treasurer, was that financially the district had a good year.

"Overall, financially, our district is in pretty good shape," Eighner said.

Approved a medical leave of absence for Teryl Silver for the time period starting on August 15, 2013 to April 4, 2014. Also approved the retirement of Teryl Silver effective April 4, 2014.
