Hoopeston Area board OKs greenhouse at high school

HOOPESTON — Hoopeston Area School Board members approved a greenhouse financial agreement Thursday with the Hoopeston Area Future Farmers of America to construct a greenhouse agriculture department at the high school.

The agreement, according to Superintendent Hank Hornbeck, was a five-year plan to allow the FFA to finance a $50,000 greenhouse project. The initial payment of $25,000 was received from ag/FFA instructor Emily McCray at Tuesday’s meeting.

"This is a big step to make this (greenhouse project) happen," Hornbeck said.

The FFA will pay $10,000 each May for the next four years, added Hornbeck, and at the end of that four years, the greenhouse will be paid.

The greenhouse idea began two years ago, said high school principal Larry Maynard, when the Cadle Foundation donated funds to help start the greenhouse project.

Also approved unanimously in regard to the Greenhouse Project was the purchase of the greenhouse from the International Greenhouse Co. at a cost not to exceed $25,735, the ground preparation for the greenhouse by Silver Brothers at a cost not to exceed $14,860, the installation of the greenhouse by International Greenhouse Co. at a cost not to exceed $18,750, and the electrical work of the greenhouse by R & M Electrical at a cost not to exceed $4,750.

Board members approved Carolyn Eyrich-Mastin’s intent to retire at the end of the 2014-2015 school year, the honorable dismissal of Scott Pittman at the end of the 2012-2013 school year and a four-year contract with Superintendent Hank Hornbeck. The board accepted the resignations of Hope Bishop, middle school classroom aide, and Michael McDermaid, sixth-grade boys basketball coach, effective at the end of this school year and the immediate resignation of Ashley Blotcky, second-grade teacher. Eight new employees were approved for the 2013-2014 school year.

Learned that Hoopeston and Milford coaches and principals had put together a contract for both schools for a Milford wrestling co-op. This contract will be brought before both schools for approval at a later date.
