Hoopeston approves Good Energy

Issue to appear on April ballot

HOOPESTON — The Hoopeston City Council unanimously approved the resolution authorizing Mayor Bill Crusinberry to sign documents between the City of Hoopeston and Good Energy Electric to receive the best electrical rate service for residents.

The electric aggregation was placed on the April ballot after it was learned the Vermilion County Board’s electric aggregation program included only rural areas of Vermilion County. Each municipality must vote on the aggregation separately to participate.

Good Energy of Peoria approached the city with a better offer than Vermilion County offered, according to the council at the last meeting.

“Consider tonight to accept the proposal of Good Energy,” said acting Mayor Pro Tem Bill Goodwine, “to allow them to campaign to get it (aggregation) passed and they would go out for bids.”

Jerod McMorris, energy consultant for Good Energy, said he would like to immediately begin educating the people on electric aggregation and the savings the aggregation would give them on their electric bills. He asked the council to help set up meetings with organizations, a town hall meeting and a place to put an ad on a billboard as soon as possible to aid in the approval of the program on the April ballot.

In other business, the city council:

  • Unanimously approved perpetual care at Floral Hill Cemetery in the amount of $3,000 for Patrick and Winona Sheridan ($1,500 for each individual).
  • Learned the swimming pool gutter leaks had been repaired; the Civic Center had a roof leak above the kitchen that needed repairs; and the furnace in the Girl Scout House had been repaired.
  • Learned research about golf cart seat belts was being looked at for discussion at a later date.
  • Learned the water/sewer and the fire and rescue departments received training in the operation and use of fire hydrants. Due to the age of the hydrants in Hoopeston, they are easily broken if not opened correctly, said Alderman Bill McElhaney.
  • Learned the University of Illinois Extension Education, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, would meet in the council chambers with people of the community at noon Friday regarding the planned workshop for graduates and advanced undergraduates to improve the quality of life in the Hoopeston area. Interested parties are invited to attend.
