Firefighters did a great job

HOOPESTON — Area firefighters — led by the Hoopeston Fire Department — put on a great display of skill, cooperation and communication this week while battling the huge fire at J & R Used Tire Service in Hoopeston.

As of Thursday afternoon, personnel from 24 area fire departments had assisted Hoopeston with the fire, 17 of them on the first day.

When fire departments call for help, no one hesitates — they go. Danville, Watseka and fire departments from across the region sent personnel to help the primary responders get a break.

The skills area firefighters used to contain the huge blaze shows the value of their training. And no one was hurt, which is the real indicator of how good these people are at their task.

A gigantic fire such as the one at J & R Used Tire Service comes along only one in a great while. The coordination and communication among the departments involved in the effort — especially in the early hours of Wednesday morning — should make area residents feel confident these departments could handle just about anything that comes their way.

Area residents deserve credit, too, for coming out to support the firefighters with donations of food and water. No one asked for the assistance. But they showed up anyway. That speaks volumes about the level of respect these firefighters have earned.

Great job, everyone.
