Hoopeston increases contribution to beautification group

HOOPESTON — City council members voted unanimously Tuesday to raise the dues level with Keep Vermilion County Beautiful to $250. Prevously the dues were $100.

"We are getting a lot more back than giving," said Mayor Bill Crusinberry. Last year, Crusinberry added, the city received a $1,500 grant for beautification and several of the schools received grants for new shrubs and bushes at the schools.

Thirteen communities in Vermilion County participate in the Keep Vermilion County Beautiful program.

In other council business, the parks committee will have a meeting at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 24, 3:30 p.m. in City Hall to discuss the Splash Pad and pool.

+ Alderman Joe Fell reported Josh Miller was the new fireman on the Hoopeston Fire Department. He also said the State Fire Marshal used Hoopeston's aerial truck to access and view the damage to the Cissna Park Bowling alley from last week's fire.

+ Learned the Chamber of Commerce and Hoopeston Jaycees will conduct their annual Community Awards Ceremony and Banquest at the Ira Owen Kreager American Legion Post 384 at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Meals with be $10 per person. Guest speaker will be Rob Schmitt, CEO fo the Gibson Area Hospital, who will provide an update on the new Family Health Care facility that is coming to Hoopeston. The next Hoopeston city council meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Feb. 4 at City Hall, 301 West Main St.
