Hoopeston Area school staff to see insurance rates increase

HOOPESTON — Hank Hornbeck, superintendent of Hoopeston Area schools, informed board members Thursday that staff health insurance rates would increase 5.99 percent from the previous year. Health insurance would remain with Health Alliance.

"The increase of 5.99 percent," Hornbeck said, "is caused by Obamacare. Obamacare taxes are 3.5 percent of that increase."

In other business, five members of the school board will visit the Manteno Middle School to learn more about Google Chromebooks that are being used there.

+ Board members approved the eligibility policy for sports with a 5-1 vote for the 2014-2015 school year. Approved unanimously were the revisions to the extracurricular policy as presented, the revised 2013-2014 school calendar to end on June 2 due to snow days, and the high school summer credit recovery program for June 2014. Ashley Gondzur was approved as the high school summer 2014 credit recovery English teacher.

+ Hornbeck stated the collective bargaining schedule with HEA will begin June 4, and continue on June 5-6.

+ Learned that John Greer Elementary fundraising efforts collected $1,468, which would be divided between the Save The Lorraine Foundation and the Hoopeston Animal Shelter.

+ Learned the summer list of activities will include new windows and doors for the high school, middle school and John Greer, thanks to TIF money of about 47,000 approved by the Hoopeston City Council.

+ The FFA sponsored Barnyard Day will be May 2 and Honors Day will be May 5 at the high school auditorium.

+ Board members approved the intent to retire letters of Carolyn Daniel for the end of the 2015-2016 school year and of Denise Ried for the end of the 2016-2017 school year. Retirement was approved of Joyce Cottingham, Donna Eells and Maria Martinez effective May 30, 2014. The transfer of Sara Troxel from Maple special education teacher to Maple kindergarten teacher was approved as was the employment of Mia Harrier as sixth-grade teacher at John Greer Grade School and Kristen Allen as English/communication/yearbook teacher at the high school for the 2014-2015 school year.

The next school board meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. May 15 in the high school library.
