Hoopeston fundraiser to help pay fire expenses

HOOPESTON — Businesses and organizations are sponsoring a Hometown Heroes Fundraiser from 2 p.m.-midnight Saturday at McFerren Park to help with expenses incurred by the J&R Used Tire fire last June.

“The amount of money that the city is going to need for everything associated with the fire is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars,” said Elizabeth Silver, committee member for the event. “We know this will only make a small chip in the amount, but the businesses and organizations in town wanted to do something.

“The one thing we want to get across is that this is a fundraiser, not an appreciation event. So everything there will have a cost, although that cost will be quite minimal.”

There will be a $1 charge at the gates to enter the park. Planned events include a WHPO auction beginning at 7 a.m. at the radio station with all proceeds going to the fundraiser, and a fishing tournament 2-4 p.m. open to young and old fishermen. Area residents and families also can take advantage of the Lion’s Club food stand, Rotary Ice Cream wagon, Smoking Joe’s BBQ, Jaycees’ cotton candy, a corn hole tournament, face painting, putt-putt golf near the swimming pool as well as the free bounce houses from 4-7 p.m.

The corn hole tournament registration will begin at 5 p.m. with $20 per team. The tournament will run from 5-7 p.m. next to the tennis courts. Prizes will be awarded to the top two teams.

Car people can “show off” their antique vehicles, fancy cars, old cars or new cars by just parking them in the car show area for people to admire. At present the Corvette Club is participating, according to Silver, and possibly the Antique Auto Club. All vehicles are welcome at the car show.
