Hoopeston receives approval for water project

HOOPESTON — City council members learned Tuesday the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has granted permission to go forward with the city’s water project.

"We have to take this next step," said Alderman Bill McElhaney. "We want to meet goals of this deadline in June."

The next step to prove that Hoopeston is serious about a loan, according to Mike Streff of Foth Infrastructure and Environment, is a resolution advertising for bids for the water treatment and storage improvement project; approve an agreement with Foth; authorize the mayor to sign documents relating to the IEPA Public Water Supply Revolving Loan Program; authorize the city attorney to prepare a debt authorizing ordinance; and a legal opinion related to the project loan.

Streff said he was told the loan documents are being prepared.

Council members unanimously approved the resolution.

In other business, council members:

Unanimously approved the resolution transferring ownership of NewWave to Rural Broadbands Investments. The only change will be the CEO, CFO and chief engineer for NewWave. Everything else remains the same including the name, according to Monique Lusk of NewWave Communications.

Unanimously approved the payment to J&R Tire for reimbursement of 10 percent of wages for 11 new employees hired in 2012 who earned more than $25,000 on the job as part of the subsidizing wage reimbursement agreement. The amount of $24,602 was reimbursed for partial year employees for this year only. The company can recover up to $75,000. It has recovered $44,602 to date.

Learned the parks committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in City Hall.

Learned the sidewalk 50/50 program will begin next year. Anyone interested should get their names in now.

Learned the Vermilion County Health Department and the HALO Project have sponsored a health initiative in Vermilion County to encourage Let’s Walk Vermilion County. Hoopeston has two walk routes, one in McFerren Park which is 0.9 mile for one lap and the sidewalk from the hospital to Sixth Avenue on Illinois Route 9 is one mile. A coordinator still is needed to set up the walk in Hoopeston on May 11. Fifteen communities will participate in the health initiative.

What’s next
