Medical problems Saturday night led to a traffic accident where a Vermilion County man was pronounced dead.
The Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department and Hoopeston rescue personnel responded just after 5 p.m. Saturday to a report of a single-vehicle accident west of Cheneyville near the intersection of County Roads 4200N and 1950E.
The driver of the vehicle, John Reed, 72, of rural Hoopeston, was pronounced dead on the scene.
Vermilion County Coroner Peggy Johnson said Reed died as a result of a heart attack.
Sheriff’s department Capt. Dennis Wood said Reed as driving a 2009 Ford sedan on County Road 1950E when he attempted to turn onto 4200N.
During that turn, Wood said Reed suffered the heart attack, causing the car to leave the road and drive out into the field where it came to a stop. A passerby reported the crash.
A passenger in the vehicle — Reed’s brother, Monty Reed, 76, of Hoopeston — suffered minor injuries and was taken to Hoopeston Community Memorial Hospital for treatment.
There was no major damage to the vehicle.
