Hoopeston council hears about sewer problem

HOOPESTON — Residents in Dice Addition brought a sewage problem to the attention of the city council members on Tuesday.

The property at 319 Pine Street has raw sewage in its back yard, said Barbara Knute, and it’s flowing into an empty lot that Knute’s own where children play. It’s also a huge problem for the Max Page family who live next door.

"This is raw sewage on the ground for over two years,’" Knute said. "There’s got to be something done."

Knute said she has talked to Mike Hanna with the department of health about the situation. She added the resident has been issued several citations.

The resident is not hooked up to the city since that part of Dice Addition is not in the city. An old cistern is connected to the property which, Ron Knute said, just keeps overflowing raw sewage into the yard each time the toilet is flushed.

"It’s a mess," said Mr. Knute, " and it stinks!"

Another resident said the inside of the house smells as bad as the outside.

Mayor Bill Crusinberry and Vermilion County Board Chairman Gary Weinard said they will contact the department of health and the county board attorney who works for the state’s attorney.

In other council business:

Council members unanimously approved the resolution to use the Motor Fuel Tax not to exceed $150,000 on street repairs for the year 2013-2014. Alderman Randy Carter said the city has $250,000 in MFT funds for street renovations. The balance will go into a reserve fund for repairs on Main Street from the railroad to Market Street.

Mike Streff from Foth Environmental said everything for the water tank repair and new water storage tank project proposal is being reviewed by the IEPA. He was told the review should be done by the end of March. He would like to have bid opening in May.

Learned applications for swimming pool manager, assistant manager, concession, and lifeguards will be available at the Water Department Office at City Hall.

Learned the solicitors ordinance needs to be revisited. Suggestions for changes should be to Alderwoman Sue Comstock by March 27. The plan is to have the ordinance ready for the next council meeting agenda.

Learned that Curt Ellis has the basic structure for the new Hoopeston website completed. The new site should be launched for the public in about five weeks.

Hoopeston City Council members will meet at 7 p.n. April 2 in City Hall, 301 W. Main St.
