ART ready to bring ‘Beauty’ to Hoopeston

HOOPESTON — The Artistic Repertory Theatre will present “Beauty and the Beast” at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in the Hoopeston Area High School auditorium.

Kids of all ages will enjoy the performances of Michael Donley as the Beast and Emily Margevich as Beauty in this stage production. The original stage production of “Beauty and the Beast” has thrilled Broadway audiences for more than 13 years.

“Beauty and the Beast reminds us all once again that things are not always as they seem,” said Carol Kloska, public relations director for ART.

The first published fairy tale version of Beauty and the Beast was published in 1740 in France and the first animated film was a feature film entitled “The Scarlet Flower” produced in Russia in 1952. Beauty and the Beast in America in 1962 was directed by Edward L. Cahn, director at Universal Studio. Cahn’s version had the prince turning into a werewolf at night, according to the history of Beauty and the Beast on Wikipedia.

In 1991, Walt Disney’s version of Beauty and the Beast, and the most traditional one that children of all ages have enjoyed through the years, was produced as a musical animated film.

The Disney version will be presented by the ART Theatre this weekend with a cast of 51 from Hoopeston, Cissna Park, Watseka, Rossville, Milford, Champaign and Boswell, Ind. All seats are $10.
