Don't miss chances to be healthy

DANVILLE — Area residents can play an important part in the search for cures for cancer by participating in a long-term study through Presence United Samaritans Medical Center.

Signing up for the study is easy, requires little other than taking a measurement and giving a small blood sample, and then filling out surveys during the coming years.

Area parents also can help ensure their children’s immediate health by taking advantage of a series of vaccination clinics sponsored by the Vermilion County Health Department.

The clinics offer parents a low-cost way to be sure their children receive the vaccinations required by Illinois schools.

It would seem a no-brainer for parents to protect their children from debilitating — and sometimes fatal — diseases, but every year school officials must deal with parents who neglect the simple duty.

The health department’s schedule for vaccinations in the weeks ahead provides ample opportunity for even the busiest parent to be sure his or her child is protected, and there even is a process for someone else to accompany the child.

Both projects — the cancer study and the vaccination clinics — help put a local focus on healthy living, something that should benefit Vermilion County residents.

The county traditionally ranks among the bottom in Illinois in regard to the health of its residents.

Opportunities such as the study and the clinics don’t happen all that often. Plan to take advantage of them.
