Look east for growth

The Commercial-News

---- — Danville city officials recently approved a plan for a consulting firm to take a look at the East Main Street corridor with an eye toward potential development.

It’s a good move that could yield long-term prosperity for the city.

The city’s far east side long has carried a stereotype of rough neighborhoods and potential problems. But it also is home to Danville Area Community College, the Department of Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System and numerous successful businesses.

Hopefully, the results of the city’s study will serve as the ignition for that growth.

The area already attracts a large number of motorists, both due to the existing places already mentioned and because East Main Street serves as the main east-west thoroughfare.

It seems as though the potential is great for more businesses and for other development that might serve DACC, Illiana Health Care and others in the area. And such development would go a long way toward erasing whatever people’s stereotypes about the east side might be.

Success breeds success. With DACC and the VA regional health care campus already strong assets for the city, we hope the consultant’s study shows much more room for growth in an area of the community where it would do a lot of good for everyone.
