For the 20th consecutive year, Danville Area Community College can mark up a success as host for the National Junior College Athletic Association Men’s Division II National Tournament.
Feeding, housing and coordinating 16 college basketball teams and all of those who accompany them is no easy task.
On top of the pure logistics of the tournament, the organizers and DACC and from the community provide a complete experience for players and fans alike. The games feature local entertainment, great concessions and special events.
Organizers work hard to bring local organizations and spectators — such as area schools and other groups — into the tournament. It not only adds to the games’ atmosphere, it helps create future fans of the tournament.
The organizers don’t do the work alone. Hundreds of volunteers serve in an array of capacities throughout the tournament, from team “parents” to taking tickets. And DACC personnel put in some long hours as well to be sure everything runs smoothly during the week.
The results of that effort is obvious. Coaches, players, fans and visitors consistently praise the organization of the tournament and all of the events surrounding it.
The event also serves as a boost to the local economy, with the 16 teams staying in local hotels, eating in local restaurants and visiting local stores and other attractions.
We add our congratulations to the NJCAA tournament organizers, DACC personnel, the volunteers and the teams themselves for another great year.
DACC will learn next month whether it will continue to serve as host for another contract with the NJCAA. We think the decision is a slam-dunk in DACC’s favor.
