Downtown invites guests

Downtown Danville Inc. hopes to see sidewalks full of visitors today and Saturday as the group’s annual Winter Gathering celebrates the holidays.

Special events, such as tonight’s Soul Food Cafe at Social, 38 N. Vermilion St.,and special deals by downtown merchants are planned through Saturday evening.

Danville’s downtown remains a busy, diverse place. Like any Midwestern city, there is an empty storefront or two, but professional services, merchants and governmental offices keep the area bustling.

The city’s decorations add to the holiday feeling, and Santa will bring his jolly self to Saturday’s Down Home Downtown Market, at 126 N. Vermilion St., from 10 a.m. to noon. Contests and other attractions also are set for the afternoon. The market features 20 local vendors offering a wide variety of goods.

The Fischer Theatre also will host special activities during the event, including book signings. Its gift shop and the Arts & Entertainment Museum that features Danville’s famous sons and daughters will be open special hours for the Winter’s Gathering. Shoppers will be able to browse among many unique gifts that show off works by local artists and others.

The event is more than just a special way to mark the holidays. Most of the merchants and offices downtown also support many of the community’s programs and activities all year long. A Winter’s Gathering, like Small Business Saturday a week ago, is a way for area residents to show their appreciation for that support by shopping and buying from local businesses.

A Winter’s Gathering gives everyone the opportunity to explore what downtown Danville has to offer. Be sure to make it part of your activities this weekend.
