Hungry kids around Danville and Vermilion County can start their day with a healthy breakfast for the third summer in a row thanks to PepsiCo/Quaker Oats.
Volunteers from the local Quaker plant serve a healthy breakfast from 9-10:30 a.m. Monday through Friday through mid August at the pavilion in Lincoln Park.
Wednesday’s breakfast also included a welcome cool-off courtesy of the Danville Fire Department squirting water on those in attendance.
Quaker has provided these breakfasts with little fanfare as a way to reach out to the community. There are no income requirements, but with a school district where a high percentage of students qualified for free or reduced-cost lunches, the need obviously exists among many families.
By providing the food directly to the children, the program organizers are sure those who need the help the most are receiving it. And the extra meal can help families stretch their food resources further.
There are more than a few residents who like to poke fun at Danville for whatever reason, but area businesses, industries and organizations do a terrific job of stepping up to help those in need on a regular basis.
Those contributions — such as the breakfast program sponsored by PeosiCo/Quaker Oats — show the real heart of the community.
Thanks, Quaker Oats, for making the summer better for a lot of the community’s children.
