---- — Anyone who thought they might enjoy a quiet, peaceful weekend around Vermilion and Fountain counties might have to wait a while. This weekend’s calendar is stuffed with events.
Today begins Taste of Downtown Danville, which runs through Sunday. A nationally sanctioned barbecue competition headlines the event, but there are plenty of other things to do. Downtown shops will be open, the most recent Leadership Tomorrow class will sponsor a 5K run and the Fischer Theatre will be open for a soda tasting event, tours of the museum and a dedication of a new exhibit honoring Danville actor James Wainwright, who starred in films such as “Joe Kidd” with Clint Eastwood.
Saturday’s calendar is full. In addition to the second day of Taste of Downtown Danville, several other events are scheduled.
Visitors to Covington, Ind., will enjoy that city’s annual one-day Apple Fest around the courthouse square. Vendors will offer a variety of items — including apples, of course — and other special attractions are planned.
The sounds of battle will echo Saturday and Sunday through the Bunker Hill area at Kennekuk County Park west of Danville as Vermilion County Civil War Days begins its annual run. More than 300 re-enactors are expected to stage battles from the Civil War. Visitors also will be able to see how soldiers and civilians of the time lived. A variety of vendors also will be set up. Admission is $10 per carload.
High school bands will step off at 4 p.m. Saturday as Danville High School plays host to its Viking Invitational Marching band Contest. A number of bands will compete throughout the afternoon. The host school’s band will perform at 8 p.m., with the awards ceremony to follow. The event is a major fundraiser for the DHS music department. Tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for children.
Several other activities dot the area’s calendar as well.
No one can say there’s nothing to do this weekend in the Vermilion County area, and the forecast looks like good weather is on tap. Get out and support these community activities.
