Soccer group hits milestone

The Commercial-News

---- — On Saturday morning, the Danville Soccer Association will mark its 30th anniversary with a short ceremony and — as in the case on many Saturday mornings — with a day of soccer games at the Winter Park complex.

The Danville Soccer Complex also marks an anniversary Saturday. Its fields have been the site for thousands of soccer matches for young people across Vermilion County and nearby areas for the past 15 years.

When organizers first started talking about a countywide soccer association, they were met by skeptics and naysayers who were unfamiliar with the sport and its benefits for children. Starting on empty lots near East Park and Northeast elementary schools, the game took root. Hundreds of youngsters — and their parents — spent hours learning about soccer and playing the game.

With the sport’s popularity growing quickly locally, association representatives — led largely by the Halloran family — put together and plan and created the soccer complex on Winter Avenue. The fields and amenities rank among the best in the Midwest and become a real asset for the community.

From those early days, several local players have gone on to earn college scholarships for their soccer skills.

Through it all, the goal — pardon the pun — for the soccer association remained the same: provide area young people with an opportunity to engage in a healthy activitity while learning about sportsmanship and team work.

Don’t take our word for it. Stop by the Danville Soccer Complex on Winter Avenue on Saturday morning. The ceremony starts at 9 a.m., with a day full of games — and fun — to follow.
