DANVILLE — As local residents prepare to gather with family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving, representatives from area organizations prepare for their big holiday push.

Two of the most visible campaigns will be the Toys for Tots sponsored by the Marine Corps League and The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Drive.

Toys for Tots collects gifts for children ages to age 12.

Toys of $30 or less in value can be donated in one of 75 specially marked barrels throughout the area.

Cash donations also are accepted The group also will sponsor a show featuring illusionist Randy Shields at 7 p.m. Saturday in Hoopeston’s Civic Center.

There’s no admission free, but donations are encouraged.

Checks also can be mailed to Jeff Wakeland, 7762 N. Meridian Road, Perrysville, IN 47974-8117. Donors should put “Danville” in the memo line.

Bell ringers will take to the streets after Thanksgiving to begin the annual collection for The Salvation Army.

The campaign stands as an important part of the United Way agency’s annual fundraising effort.

In both campaigns, most of the money collected goes to helps others in the region.

The donations go to help make sure children in need will receive presents for Christmas and their families have enough food for a special holiday meal.

It doesn’t take a lot of money to make a big difference in a child’s life.

Even just handfuls of change dropped into the Salvation Army kettle combined with everyone else’s contribution can add up to make a merry Christmas for all.
