Don't be a big Grinch out there

The Commercial-News

---- — The last-minute shopping crunch will put many area residents into stores today and in the hours before Christmas morning, all in the search to find the perfect gift at the right price for a special person on their list.

Add to that stress the crush of lots of shoppers in the stores, and it creates a recipe for impatience, rudeness and downright meanness during this season of peace, joy and generosity.

We too often forget to treat others with the same patience and kindness we would like to be treated with when the holidays continue to inch closer and closer and our to-do lists appear to grow longer and longer.

We all need to step back, slow down, take a deep breath and remember to treat everyone — even the store clerks who seem to move with the speed of a turtle and have little knowledge about products and procedures — with courtesy. Letting a frustrating situation cause high blood pressure and short tempers only hurts our own health and does little to resolve the situation.

While we’re on the topic of kindness and generosity, we’d be remiss not to mention the many local businesses and their employees who contributed so much to students in area schools.

Their efforts will make Christmas much brighter for many boys and girls. The gifts come with no thought of what might be received in return, only in the true spirit of Christmas.

So warm up the credit and debit cards and count out your cash. It’s time to finish up those gift lists once and for all. And remember, spread a little Christmas cheer as you go about your day. You know ... he sees you when you’re sleeping, he knows when you’re awake!
