Hundreds of new faces will be seen around Danville this week, specifically at Danville Area Community College, as 16 teams compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament tips off.
The event provides an excellent opportunity for the city and surrounding communities to show off their best qualities to visitors who might not otherwise have a reason to visit.
From the dozens of volunteers who lend a hand during the tournament to clerks in local stores, everyone has the chance to create a good first impression of our community and of the people who live here.
The treatment the tournament visitors receive does count. NJCAA officials and representatives of the participating schools often mention the friendliness and helpful nature of the people they come in contact with during the event. That’s a standard everyone shares during the week ahead.
That quality care also plays a role in DACC and Danville serving as hosts for the tournament for the 20th straight year. Collegiate athletics is a business at any level, and the NJCAA would not continue to award the tournament to DACC unless the event goes off without a hitch.
Local organizers also do a great job of involving area residents in the tournament by recruiting local entertainers — especially area school bands and choral groups. That helps build local interest in the tournament.
So get ready to enjoy a week of great basketball assisted by great volunteers. Thanks to the organizers and all those involved, the tournament continues to be a great event for the community, DACC and the NJCAA.
