Step out to create change

The Commercial-News

---- — Saturday’s Unity in the Community event looks to be a good opportunity for residents from all parts of the city to do just as organizers intended — come together with others to promote cooperation and understanding.

Many residents find it easy to blame the community’s problems on “those people” or to create stereotypes within neighborhoods as being “bad” or “good.”

Most of the “facts” being tossed around often are not factual at all. Too many people find it too easy to believe rumor and innuendo than to make an effort to really find out what’s going on.

And simple passing on what’s been heard takes far less effort than working to verify something. It’s always easy to stay seated and be critical than it is to stand up and start working on solutions.

Saturday’s Unity in the Community effort provides an opportunity to stand up and start to work.

Marchers — led by the Danville High School band — will gather at 1 p.m. at the Dollar General store at East Main and Griffin streets. They will walk north on Griffin to Williams Street, then west on Williams to Collett Street. They will follow Collett until the get to Seminary Street, where they will west and on to Carver Park.

At the park, activities will begin at 2 p.m. Food, entertainment and prizes will be free o those who attend.

The special day also serves as a sort of back-to-school rally for children.

The event is sponsored by Danville Caucus, Inc., a group whose members want to create positive change within the community.

The effort always can use more support. Come out Saturday and add yours.
