Season for giving

DANVILLE — Sarge’s banquet hall hosted a benefit for the Toys for Tots program on Thursday, Nov. 10.

Toys for Tots, a not-for-profit organization, is sponsored by the Marine Corps, nationwide, and allows people to donate toys for the less fortunate children in the community.

The event involved a live auction, complete with auctioneer, along with a silent auction.

“Guest servers” were present for attendees to donate their tips. There also were boxes for people to place toys to donate toward the cause.

In the past year, Toys for Tots collected 3.86 million toys for kids in need during the holiday season.

Mary Morison, who helps with the benefit every year says, “The need has increased every year, on average about 12 percent.”

Considering the economy is in such bad shape, Toys for Tots coordinator Jeff Wakeland said, “I was told there was going to be a bigger need this year, due to our financial status as a country and especially city. That’s why we’re doing this.”

For Vermilion County, Morison says “The community’s response to the program is overwhelming. And because of this, we’ve never turned down a needy family.”

With the holiday season quickly approaching, the need is ever growing. If you, or someone you know, would like to donate to the organization, please contact the Salvation Army Social Services at (217) 442-5911. The campaign runs through Dec. 9, so there is still plenty of time to get your donations in.
