Massachusetts student held on $1M bail for terrorist threat

METHUEN, Mass. — An 18-year-old Methuen, Mass. high school student was arrested yesterday afternoon after allegedly posting comments on his Facebook page that suggested he wanted to kill people and outdo the Boston Marathon bombings, police said. He’s being held on $1 million bail.

Cameron B. Dambrosio, 18, was arrested at 1:35 p.m. and charged with communicating a terrorist threat, a felony with a penalty of up to 20 years in prison, said Methuen Police Chief Joseph Solomon. The language was not directed at a specific person or target, officials said, but was a general threat of violence and terrorism.

“We have zero tolerance,” he said. “We take these very seriously.”

Police searched the student's home yesterday, finding a computer and Xbox that were turned over to the state police for analysis. Detectives are also going through his Facebook page for more evidence.

A clerk magistrate set bail Dambrosio’s bail at $1 million. He was being held overnight at the Methuen Police Station and is set to be arraigned in Lawrence District Court today.

“We have contacted the FBI because of some of the language,” Solomon said. “He made comments about the White House and the federal government. So, we have forwarded that the FBI.”

In a press release yesterday, Methuen Superintendent Judith Scannell said the high school administration worked with the school resource officer and the Police Department after learning about the Facebook post.

“Methuen High School students reported to administration that they had received a Facebook phone message sent by a Methuen High School student with disturbing verbiage,” she said. “The student made terrorist threats not directly towards the school but in general.”

Dambrosio was not in school yesterday, Scannell and Solomon said.

Solomon said Dambrosio posted a number of “alarming” comments on Facebook that triggered the arrest.

“He’s telling people to shut up and in order to get some props he’ll have to go kill somebody. He says he’ll go insane and make the news,” Solomon said. “And he said people shouldn’t cry when they see what he does because they have it coming.”
